The courtyard garden is lush in the summer

Sun and flowers in the courtyard garden at the ANZ Guesthouse. A warm climate, lots of sun, and of course lots of attention. The courtyard and balconies make for a vertical garden.

The words turban and tulip both come from the same Ottoman Turkish word tülbend, as the Ottoman Turks brought the tulip to Europe in the 1500s.

The early 1600s in the Netherlands saw a huge economic bubble called tulipmania, in which single bulbs were bought and sold for enormous prices. A single bulb of a famous variety might cost 1000 Dutch florins, at a time that the average yearly wage was about 150 florins. Tulips were traded on the Dutch stock exchanges, and many people sold (and ultimately lost!) all their possessions to speculate in the tulip market.
