Reading a guidebook in preparation for visiting Ephesus

It is easy to feel overwhelmed when you are about to visit a site with as much history as Ephesus. Political history — Ephesus was one of the four principal cities of the Roman Empire, along with Rome, Antioch (today's Antakya, also in Turkey), and Alexandria (on Egypt's Mediterranean coast). Cultural and art history — the architecture and art of Ephesus include a wide variety of styles. Religious history — Ephesus was a major site in the founding of the Christian church. But before that, this was one of the main sites for the really old-time religion, the West Asian Mother Goddess worship. But don't feel overwhelmed, the guesthouse has a number of books you can read to better understand what you see.
