Backgammon,
or avla in Turkish,
is popular throughout the Middle East.
If you already enjoy backgammon,
you will have many opportunities to play
while in Turkey.
And if you don't yet know how, you will have many
opportunities to learn.
The ancient Egyptians played a similar game,
which they called senet.
But the Royal Game of Ur from ancient Mesopotamia
is the more likely ancestor of modern games in the
backgammon family.
Excavations in Iran show that a similar game was
played there around 3000 BC.
